Miniature Painting Tips: Brushes

We were asked for more painting tips so we sat down with our designer, David Heathfield (Golden Demon Winner & Ex 'Eavy Metal) to give us some of his top tips.

"Which brushes do I recommend? well I use the Windsor and Newton Series 7 as do most top painters and the 'Eavy Metal team, simply nothing else comes close in comparison. However, these are expensive brushes and are suited to very high end, careful painting, and will not last long if you are painting an army or are a beginner.

"I won't go into keeping your brush in good condition in this post but once paint gets into the ferrule (the top of the brush, where the hairs meet the metal part) that is pretty much the beginning of the end.

These type of brushes also require a breaking in period. I recommend using a cheaper set of sable brushes from your local art supply or hobby shop for most things and saving your Windsor and Newton's for the best. I always like to have a size 2.1 and 00 but pretty much all details can be accomplished with a size 1, in good condition.
